Gotta Hand It To The Alabama Democrats! They did something that has never been done before in ANY state in ANY election. Steven Lemon 13 Dec 2017 They got the BLACK vote out in larger percentages than ever before and that made the difference in the election of Doug Jones to the Alabama senate.
This SHOULD be, but I doubt it will be a valuable lesson for Democrats in general and Black Democrats (I know, that's redundant) in particular what COULD happen if the Black vote were energized in other contests year 'round instead of just when there are hot button issues on the table. Charles Barkley waxed eloquent after the results were announced that Democrats have taken the Black vote for granted for years, adding "It is time for Democrats to wake up and make life better for Black people and poor White people". I don't mean to nitpick, but does that sound RACIST? I mean the statement assumes that WHITE people who are not poor might NOT be shortchanged AND also that ALL Black people are dependent upon the Democrats (and only Democrats) to make life better for them. My man Charles doesn't mention the possibility that poor Black people can do anything to make life better for themselves. When you think about it, the underlying sentiment seems to be "We will continue to support you even if you DON'T wake up, but it would be nice if you should wake up anyway". Having said that, however, reality compels that I confess the GOP has a real problem on its hands if Black voters across the country open their eyes to what COULD happen if such energy was displayed at the polls EVERY year, namely the GOP would be relegated to second class citizenship for decades to come regardless of how well they are able to govern, because Black voters will vote 85% for a worthless, useless Democrat regardless of performance or platform regardless of who it is or what the opponent might say, do or stand for. The Conservative movement in this country, in spite of huge gains in legislative power over the past ten years, faces the prospect of losing it all for generations unless something is done NOW to head of the tsunami of suddenly awakened Black voters across the nation and not only continues to submit themselves in blind support of the Democrat party but to START voting in larger percentages than ever before. For Democrats, of course. It will still, in my opinion, be generations down the road before a significant number of Black voters will vote based on an objective review of a candidate's policy. SMDH
